Call for Applications for Veteran Friendly Community Designation
ETCOG Opens Applications for Veteran-Friendly Community Designation
The East Texas Council of Governments (ETCOG) is now accepting applications for the 2025 Veteran-Friendly Community Designation Program. This initiative recognizes East Texas communities within ETCOG’s 14-county region that go above and beyond in supporting veterans and their families.
ETCOG serves Anderson, Camp, Cherokee, Gregg, Harrison, Henderson, Marion, Panola, Rains, Rusk, Smith, Upshur, Van Zandt, and Wood counties.
Since launching last year, the program has already designated two communities—Quitman/Wood County and Tyler/Smith County—as Veteran-Friendly. The effort is also gaining national recognition. ETCOG was recently honored with the Achievement Award from the National Association of Regional Councils and the Impact Award from the National Association of Development Organizations for its leadership in veteran support.
“Veterans have given much in service to our country, and strong communities help them successfully transition back to civilian life. The Veteran-Friendly Community Designation is a badge of honor that signifies a city is committed to providing veterans with the respect, resources, and support they deserve,” said ETCOG Executive Director, David Cleveland.
How to Apply:
Cities within ETCOG’s 14-county region are eligible to apply by reviewing the program’s criteria, which highlight both economic opportunities and community support tailored to veterans. Applications are due Thursday, December 19, 2025, by 5:00 p.m. ETCOG staff are available to assist throughout the application process.
ETCOG encourages all eligible cities to apply and join in building a region known for its dedication to those who have served. For full program details and application materials, visit www.etcog.org/veteran-friendly-community.
