Regional Training
The East Texas Council of Governments (ETCOG) contracts with the East Texas Police Academy (ETPA) to provide basic and advanced law enforcement training in the East Texas region.  Classroom topics are varied and consist of continuing education, tactical, and state mandated courses. Training certificates are provided to all students who satisfactorily complete Academy courses and all training is reported to the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE). Certain courses require prerequisites (as indicated in each course description) which must be met prior to acceptance for admission. The ETPA, a division of Kilgore College, is licensed by TCOLE and is approved by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Funding for this program is provided by the Governor's Office, Criminal Justice Division (CJD). Funding provides training to approximately 2300 officers annually.
Additionally, grant funds are available for law enforcement officers attending out of region training (training not provided in the ETCOG region) on a first come first basis.  Out of region training scholarships/stipends must be authorized and approved by ETCOG criminal justice staff prior to attendance/travel.  Please contact Beverly Brooks with all questions concerning training scholarships and required paperwork at 903-218-6414 or at beverly.brooks@etcog.org. All funding for scholarships is provided by a grant through the Texas GOvernor's Office, Criminal Justice Division.
